Karl-Matthias Klause is a career diplomat and was appointed Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in London in July 2024. 

From 2021-2024 he was the Alternate Director for Germany at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London, from 2017-2021 Karl-Matthias Klause was Head of the Economic Department of the German Embassy in Washington.

Before going to Washington he was Chef de Cabinet of a Minister of State and Director for Central Europe. He has served at German Missions in Washington, London and Warsaw. 

On earlier assignments he served in the Foreign Policy Department of the Federal Chancellery, in the Foreign ministry as liaison diplomat with the German Bundestag and in the Foreign Relations Committee of the German Bundestag. 

He studied Medieval and Modern history, German and English Literature and Philosophy in Münster and at the Free University in Berlin. He was a visiting teaching scholar at Queen Mary University of London on international relations. He is an elected member of the Board of the German Shakespeare Society of 1864.
