Looking Ahead to the US Presidential Election

Last month, The Ditchley Foundation held a conference entitled Special Relationships in Uncertain Times: how can US allies best prepare for outcomes of US elections, which gathered participants from European and North American countries, including current and former government officials with experience in economics, trade, national security, defence and diplomacy, as well as representatives from the worlds of politics, journalism and academia.

The conference discussions focused on the implications of the upcoming US presidential election for the policies of its allies on several global challenges. It was noted that there was likely to be remarkable continuity on many issues on a strategic level as underlying US political dynamics had not changed, particularly in Congress. However, the tactics and preferences of the two candidates would likely be different.
